Root Connections Garden News…..

We’re off to a great start this year in the garden, but just as a recap of last year we were pleased with the media coverage we received; with a visit from Sally Challoner from BBC Points West, a short film on BBC Somerset, a great feature on Countryfile on rural homelessness & our very own Rob in an article in Farmer’s Weekly highlighting the benefits of working outdoors & the importance of social reintegration & working towards ending homelessness - which is, after all is what the whole project is about.

Somerset Farmers Markets

Our Church Network is expanding; we’re now selling at the following & hoping to add to our list of supporting churches:

  • Wells Cathedral - 2nd Sunday of every month, next one 10th Feb 2019

  • Vineyard, Bath (Bath Pavilion) – 3rd Sunday, next one 17th Feb 2019

  • Elim Connect, Wells – 4th Sunday, next one 24th Feb 2019.

If you would like to sell in your own church & the homeless in our rural community is your chosen ‘Compassion project’ please get in touch & we can have a chat with you & your leadership team & support you in setting this up.

We’re also selling at Midsomer Norton Farmer’s & Keynsham Farmer’s Market on the 1st & 2nd Saturday of every month respectively. Next one being Keynsham on Saturday 9th Feb 2019.

Growing land

Our new, additional 1acre site has been prepared & rabbit proof fencing installed, just before the snow arrived(!).

Alex, our new gardener joined us in January & is already underway with planning this season’s crops & alongside our jams, chutneys, coffee etc. we’re excited to be offering Spring bulbs, cut flowers, a wide selection of chemical free veg’ & as we progress in to Spring & Summer we will be inviting customers up to the farm on a Tues & Fri morning to select & buy their own veg, flowers, fruit & plants – watch this space!

We’re also looking forward to supplying our seasonal large & small veg boxes in to Somerset Local Food Direct again this year.

How to get involved……

Our army of volunteers is steadily growing & we really couldn’t manage without them, but we’re always ready to welcome some new faces.

We meet weekly on a Tuesday & Friday morning, from 10am ‘til 1pm & every Friday we have a cooked lunch together – it’s on us & it’s our way of saying “Thank You!”.

No skills required, just a love of being outdoors & happy to muck in. We have a range of jobs for mixed abilities, we’re happy to teach & supervise as we go & we always have a planned & structured morning - which we email out to our team of volunteers prior to meeting up, so you can pick & choose your favourite bits. We have a flower garden, a veg’ garden, a polytunnel & a fully kitted out woodwork shed with two work benches & power tools - all ready to be enjoyed.

We would also love some help with our weekend markets, church sales & helping out at events throughout the year – this is a great way to become an ambassador for the project & help promote all the great work that’s going on within our community.

We also need Drivers to help collect people from Wells & Frome. We have a lot of ex hostel residents & Connect Centre users who still want to be a part of the garden project but can’t get to us.

This is a vital part of their ongoing recovery & offers a chance for us to check-in with each other, stay connected & provide ongoing support.
